Responsible fisheries
Fishing is a major source of food for humanity and a provider of employment and economic benefits to those engaged in the activity. The wealth of aquatic resources was once assumed to be limitless, but we now know that whilst they are renewable, they are not infinite and need to be properly managed to ensure their continued and sustainable use.

Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries

The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) prepared the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, which was unanimously adopted on the 31 October 1995 by the FAO conference. It provides a necessary framework for national and international efforts to ensure sustainable exploitation of aquatic living resources in harmony with the environment. For more information on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, visit http://www.fao.org/docrep/005/v9878e/v9878e00.htm.
