| | A beginner's guide to Desmids..............................
Desmids are a type of green algae and are therefore photosynthetic organisms. The method of sexual reproduction is through conjunction. Of the algae that reproduce in this way are multicellular and unicellular forms. Desmids are unicellular and can be broken down into two types-
Placoderm desmids ('true' desmids, Order Desmidiales Family Gonatozygacae) and Saccoderm desmids ('false desmids' Order Zygnematales Family Mesotaeniaceae). | Morphology | | | | Desmids are attractive unicellular green algae. Two semi-cells are joined by a narrow connection call the isthmus in which the nucleus is found. Each semi cell contains one chloroplast. Desmids have three planes of symmetry and are found in a variety of shapes. Many species are ornamented with spines and granules. They are relatively small and can not be seen with the naked eye.
