Immature stages

 
These larvae are usually found at the edges of ponds and lakes but may also be found in wetlands and less commonly in streams and large rivers. Larvae are usually stout-bodied and well camoflaged. Some larvae can be tollerant of low dissolved oxygen and may therefore be found in warmer water bodies with a high nutrient content.
