Corduliidae (Emerald dragonflies)
Common names for members of this family include emerald dragonflies and green-eyed skimmers. They have an almost world-wide distribution but some species are localised and rare, e.g. Hine's emerald dragonfly (Somatochlora hineana), which is only found in a few states in the USA.

Ecological and Habitat Requirements

Habitat requirements differ between species. For example, the Northern emerald Somatochlora arctica needs moorland bogs in which to reproduce, adults mainly inhabiting wet meadows and other open areas whilst the brilliant emerald Somatochlora metallica prefers sheltered habitats with a muddy substrate often overlaid with leaf litter for larvae.
