Abstract / Description

This article examines both sides of the ongoing debate surrounding biodiversity. The argument predominantly concerns the techniques used in experiments that aim to show that higher species diversity improves ecosystem function. There is a discussion of the problems surrounding experimental proof of the diversity-stability debate and it is shown that this area is (experimentally) in its infancy as there are still no universally accepted 'rules'. The discussion highlights the difficulty surrounding the implementation of biodiversity issues into management when there is no consensus amongst scientists about there importance.
